Dr Hyun's Diplomate of Korean Medicine System (D.K.M.S.)
Diplomate of Korean Medicine System, as a customized primary healthcare system, encompasses methods for treating a wide range of diseases. It addresses conditions such as ear, nose, and throat disorders, digestive problems, neurological disorders, women's health issues, geriatric diseases, and pain management. This approach utilizes treatment techniques developed by Dr. Hyun, based on the fundamental principles of Korean SAAM acupuncture and SASANG constitutional medicine.
Dr. Hyun graduated from Parker University College of Chiropractic and graduated from Washington College of Asian Medicine. He then served as a professor at the Washington College of Asian Medicine, has practiced for 30 years. He has also developed D.K.M.S. (Diplomate of Korean Medicine System), and the five element body anatomy and acupuncture points. He is now treating patients who have intractable diseases. He has been teaching for more than 15 years and has influenced for many Asian medical doctors. He is currently a president of HANBIT UNIVERSITY, and is educating acupuncture and herbal medicine. He is practicing D.K.M.S. and teaching for practitioners who has licensed acupuncturists and doctors.
S.A.A.M. Korean Acupuncture
Acupuncture is a safe, effective, chemical-free way to promote your body's self-healing abilities.
Modern research has shown that acupuncture is a safe, effective, chemical-free way to promote the body's remarkable self-healing abilities. An acupuncture treatment involves the insertion and manipulation of flexible, hair-thin needles at specific points on the body. Most patients find the sensations produced by acupuncture treatment to be deeply relaxing both mentally and physically.
SAAM Acupuncture Techniques (Genuine Five Element Acupuncture techniques) is a Korean classical, holistic system based on the,
natural world's cycles treating the mind, body, and spirit by balancing five fundamental elements—Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water. It focuses on identifying a primary "Causative Factor" (the root imbalance) to correct energy (Qi) flow through specific acupuncture points.
This method utilizes the principles of the Five Elements (wood, fire, earth, metal, and water) to treat the root cause of illness. It primarily uses the Five Shu points below the elbows and knees, and applies tonification and sedation techniques according to the deficiency or excess of energy to restore balance in the body.
Root Cause Treatment: Instead of simply treating the affected area, we identify and treat the underlying cause of the illness.
Based on Yin-Yang and Five Elements Theory: The 12 meridians are classified according to the Five Elements, and the principles of mutual generation and mutual restraint of the Five Elements are applied.
Using Tonification and Sedation Methods: According to the principle, if there is a deficiency (lack of vital energy), the mother point is tonified, and if there is an excess (excessive pathogenic energy), the child point is sedated.
Distal Point Treatment (Opposite Side): Acupuncture needles are typically inserted into the hands and feet on the opposite side of the affected area (treating the left side for right-sided problems, and vice versa) to maximize effectiveness.
SASANG Constitutional Herbal Medicine
SASANG constitutional medicine is a unique Korean system of personalized medicine founded by Lee Je-ma (1837-1900) during the late Joseon Dynasty. It classifies human constitutions into four types—Tae-Yang (Greater Yang), Tae-Eum (Greater Yin), So-Yang (Lesser Yang), and So-Eum (Lesser Yin)—based on functional differences in the five internal organs and six viscera. It then diagnoses and treats illnesses according to these different constitutional types.
Four Constitutional Classifications: Individuals are classified into four types (Tae-Yang, Tae-Eum, So-Yang, and So-Eum) based on the relative size of their lungs, liver, spleen, and kidneys.
Dongui Susebowon: This is the fundamental classic text of Sasang constitutional medicine, authored by Lee Je-Ma.
Constitution-Specific Treatment: Even for the same disease, the medication (herbal medicine) and treatment methods are applied differently depending on the individual's constitution.
Constitutional Diagnostic Factors: Constitution is diagnosed based on factors such as body type, appearance, personality, and temperament (emotions like joy, anger, sorrow, and pleasure).
Constitutional medicine goes beyond simply treating illnesses; it emphasizes "health preservation" by preventing diseases through diet and lifestyle habits tailored to one's constitution.
Herbal Medicine are often used in conjunction with acupuncture for added therapeutic effect. While many cultures have herbal medicine traditions, the sophistication of herbal medicine is unsurpassed. Herbal medicine has a long history reaching back several thousand years, and the resulting system is now used to treat everything from the common cold to symptoms associated with cancer.
Moxibustion
Moxibustion is a traditional Korean medicine (TKM) therapy using burning mugwort (moxa) on or near acupoints to warm the body, stimulate circulation (Qi), and relieve pain, often for conditions like arthritis, digestive issues, and even turning breech babies. The process involves practitioners burning moxa sticks or cones, either directly on the skin (with protection) or held above it, to create heat and therapeutic effects, though direct application carries a risk of burns and scarring.
Cupping
Cupping is an ancient technique, used in many cultures, in which a special cup is applied to the skin and held in place by suction. The suction draws superficial tissue into the cup, which may either be left in place or moved along the body. Cupping brings fresh blood to the area and helps improve circulation. Traditional cupping, sometimes referred to as “fire cupping," uses heat to create a vacuum-like suction inside of glass cups. In modern times, cups that use a small pump to create suction have also been introduced.
Deep Tissue Acupressure
Deep Tissue Acupressure is a powerful form of Asian medical bodywork. Based on the same Asian medical principles as acupuncture, Acupressure seeks to improve the flow of qi through the meridian channels. Acupressure is particularly effective for actions involving muscles, tendons and joints, such as structural misalignment, orthopedic problems and sports injuries. It can also be used to treat internal diseases
Guasha
Guasha is a traditional Asian medicine technique where a smooth-edged tool is used to scrape the skin to address pain, inflammation, and other health concerns. It's believed to improve circulation, break up stagnant energy (Qi), and promote healing.
A smooth-edged tool (often made of jade or quartz) is used to scrape lubricated skin. The goal is to increase blood flow, reduce congestion, and promote healing.
Pain relief: May help alleviate muscle pain, headaches, and other forms of pain. Reduced inflammation: Can help reduce swelling and inflammation in various areas of the body.
Improved circulation: May increase blood flow to the treated area. Lymphatic drainage: Can help promote lymphatic drainage and reduce puffiness. Skin rejuvenation: Facial gua sha is used to improve circulation, collagen production, and skin elasticity. The tool is moved in strokes, typically in a downward direction away from the head.
Chiropractic Care
Chiropractic care is a healthcare profession focused on the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of mechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal system, particularly the spine. Chiropractors use hands-on manipulation, also known as adjustments, to restore proper joint movement and alignment, aiming to relieve pain and improve overall bodily function.
Chiropractors conduct thorough examinations, including taking patient history, performing physical tests, and potentially using diagnostic imaging, to identify the source of the problem.
Tension headaches and some types of migraines can be managed with chiropractic treatment.
Chiropractic can address pain in various joints, including those in the arms and legs.
Chiropractors also treat conditions like sciatica, scoliosis, and sports injuries.
The core treatment involves spinal manipulation (adjustments) using their hands or instruments to apply controlled force to specific joints.
Many chiropractors also incorporate other therapies like heat and ice, electrical stimulation, relaxation techniques, exercises, and lifestyle advice.
