The common cold is a viral infection affecting the nose, sinuses, throat, and windpipe. It is caused by more than 200 different viruses. Symptoms include a stuffy or runny nose, sneezing, and a sore throat. There is no cure, but it usually goes away within a week to 10 days.

Acute bronchitis will go away without treatment in many cases. If your cough lasts more than three weeks, prevents you from sleeping, is accompanied by fever, produces discolored mucus or blood, or is associated with wheezing or shortness of breath.
Asthma
Asthma is a condition in which your airways narrow and swell and may produce extra mucus. This can make breathing difficult and trigger coughing, a whistling sound (wheezing) when you breathe out and shortness of breath. For some people, asthma is a minor nuisance. For others, it can be a major problem that interferes with daily activities and may lead to a life-threatening asthma attack. Asthma can't be cured, but its symptoms can be controlled.
